Welcome to the Global Roadmap for Improved Control of FMD
in Endemic Settings website.
This website is intended primarily for
participants of the Roadmap Workshop, to be held at the
Clarks Hotel in Agra, India from 29th November to 1st December
2006. Some parts of the website are password protected -
others are free access.
Efficacious vaccines, strategically deployed, have revolutionized
the control of many infectious human and animal diseases.
For foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), which severely constrains
the welfare of millions of small scale livestock farmers
in the developing world; currently available vaccines do
not meet many of the basic requirements necessary for sustainable
control. There is an urgent and long-overdue need to address
special research needs, to fulfil the aspirations of this
group of stakeholders. The Wellcome Trust has provided partial
funding for Global Roadmap Workshop on Improved Control
of FMD in Endemic Settings, where these research needs will
be defined, and research needs indentified.
The workshop will have the following key objectives:
-
To provide crucial
momentum to a global initiative on improving the capacity
of countries in which FMD is endemic to control the disease
through the use of improved vaccines and other associated
technologies.
-
To present and discuss
the market demands for current and new FMD vaccines, and
the long-term sustainability of such markets.
-
To review and critique
draft research ideas on the development of a new generation
of FMD vaccines, diagnostics, and epidemiological tools
to evaluate their success, targeted at the needs of developing
countries.
-
To identify and
engage with key research and development partners interested
in participating in a Global Roadmap for Improved FMD
Control in Endemic Settings, including research institutes,
pharmaceutical industries and biotech enterprises, including
those located in the developing world.
-
To produce a portfolio
of concept notes for subsequent development as full research
proposals for submission to the Wellcome Trust and other
relevant sponsors within four months of the workshop.
-
To provide a structured
report of the workshop describing outputs, roadmap structure
and proposed research plan.
This workshop will bring
together experts in vaccinology, FMD, developing country
vaccine and control requirements, biotechnology enterprises
and potential sponsors to critique draft research plans
for the development of technologies and decision support
tools, to address the very specific needs of countries in
which FMD is endemic, and particularly smallholder livestock
farmers in developing countries...more
